Food order and delivery unicorn Swiggy has made their first acquisition of 2019 as the company has confirmed acqui-hiring Kint.io, the AI startup which uses deep learning and computer vision to identify objects in any video. As per the reports, the two-member team of Kint is hired for their talent and nor because of their services or products.
The deal will help Swiggy in ramping up their computer vision and consumer experience segment. As part of the deal, Pavithra Solai Jawahar and Jagannathan Veeraraghavan the founders of Kint who started the platform in 2014 will be joining Swiggy.
Dale Vaz, head of engineering and data sciences at Swiggy commenting on the development through a statement in the press said, “The team at Kint.io comes with an exceptional understanding and expertise in AI, machine learning and data sciences. This acqui-hire is part of Swiggy's strategy to scale our tech prowess by bringing in entrepreneurial teams that can solve unique customer problems while leveraging the network and resources at Swiggy. The focus has never been more intense on building industry-changing technology in AI and other areas. We look forward to working together on great new features and capabilities.
Kint founders also released a statement and shared their decision of joining Swiggy. "AI research has leapfrogged this past year but lacks of data, cultural biase and inability to adapt to our diversity have somehow always pulled us back when it comes to applying AI to India-based problems, effectively. This is where Swiggy left us stumped. We were impressed by the team’s razor-focused mindset to bring ingenious solutions for problems unique to India. We are confident that this partnership can unlock immense possibilities. This is a great opportunity for us to show scale and address a-billion-people problems through AI. We look forward to an interesting inning with Swiggy,” the press release of the founders read.
Prior to this acquisition, Swiggy had acquired food and accessories delivery platform Scootsy and Food startup 48East. The current online food segment in the country is going through a massive competition where along with Swiggy, Zomato, Foodpanda, and UberEats are the major players.
